How to become a nurse in Singapore?
More than two years of school and training is a must to become a Registered Nurse in Singapore. In terms of certification criteria and educational institutions from which you might earn them.
There are 2 types of nurses: Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse.
Registered nurses (RNs) and enrolled nurses (ENs) have various levels of education and training, and as a result, their areas of practice differ as well.
A Registered Nurse (RN) can be obtained by an Enrolled Nurse (EN) with further education and a strong academic record. However, you should be aware that becoming an RN does not necessitate first becoming an EN.
To become an enrolled nurse
- To become an Enrolled Nurse, you will need to devote two years to obtain a NITEC in Nursing.
- Complete training for the NITEC in Nursing covers 15 months at the ITE College in Simei Avenue and 9 months of clinical supervision in healthcare facilities, including shifts and weekend duties.
- The statistics of Singaporean nurses based on four types of nurses, namely registered nurses, enrolled nurses, registered midwives, and advanced practical nurses.
- According to Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH), nurses are classified as “Registered Nurse”(RN) and “Enrolled Nurse”(EN).
Eligibility
- Registered nurses in Singapore are required to obtain either a Diploma in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science degree to practice their profession (Nursing).
- National University of Singapore‘s Bachelor of Science (Nursing) program takes three years to complete (or 4 years for a degree with Honours).
- There are three options for obtaining a diploma in nursing in Singapore: Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and Parkway College of Nursing and Allied Health Pte Ltd.
- Both diploma and degree holders are eligible to become nurses.

Documents required
- Passport photograph or NRIC (if applicable)
- Marriage Certificate ( if required)
- Nursing transcript from a training facility, university, or other academic institution (to include a detailed breakdown of theory and clinical practice in hours or weeks)
- Training certificate /graduate certificate
- Registration certificate
- Current nursing license / Practising certificate(s)
- Additionally, for Former employers to provide references/work testimonials, they must be prepared by the Nursing Director/Head of Nursing.
Salary of the nurse in Singapore?
- It depends on various factors. In general, RNs are paid more than ENs, with the former earning an average of $2,400 per month and the latter roughly $1,750.
Working Conditions
Based on HSEU’s agreements with NUHS, SingHealth, and NHG, the maximum working hours per week for nurses is 42 hours for regular shift, 40 hours for a rotating shift, and 38 hours for permanent night shift.
Registered nurses can specialize their nursing skills in different practices, and can further their career as an Advance Practice Nurse (APN)which includes Nurse Clinician, Nurse Educator, and Nurse Manager.
