National Gallery Singapore will shut its doors for Renovation
If the Southeast Asia Gallery is part of your regular museum visits, here’s an important update. The National Gallery Singapore has announced that its Southeast Asia Gallery will temporarily close for an extensive revamp starting April 1, 2026.
The refreshed gallery is expected to reopen in November 2027 — but visitors won’t be completely without access in the meantime.
When Is the Closure?
The closure begins on April 1, 2026, and will affect:
- Levels 3, 4, and 5 of the Former Supreme Court Wing
- Rotunda Library
- UOB Theatrette
Additionally, the Rotunda Library and Archive closed earlier on February 14. From then on, access is strictly by appointment only, so spontaneous visits will not be possible.
What Will Remain Open?
While the main gallery spaces will be inaccessible, parts of the building will continue welcoming visitors, including:
- The Former Supreme Court Foyer (Level 1)
- The Historical Lobby (Level 3)
This ensures that the Gallery remains partially accessible during renovation works.
Interim Gallery Opening in October 2026
To bridge the long closure period, a scaled-down interim gallery is scheduled to open in October 2026. It will showcase selected highlights from the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery collection.
Though not a full-scale experience, this interim space will continue presenting important works from the region, keeping the artistic dialogue alive.
Featured artists include:
- Raden Saleh, a pioneering 19th-century Indonesian painter
- Phra Soralaklikhit, known for early modern Thai artistic practices
Why the Revamp?
According to Chief Curator Patrick Flores, the revamp reflects years of curatorial research and a shift in how Southeast Asian art is understood today.
Rather than presenting the region as a fixed category, the updated gallery aims to explore Southeast Asia as a space shaped by:
- Movement
- Cultural exchange
- Shared and overlapping histories
The transformation signals a deeper, more contemporary approach to presenting art from the region.
What This Means for Visitors?
If you’ve been planning a visit to the Southeast Asia Gallery, consider doing so before April 2026. After that, access will be limited until the reopening in November 2027.
However, with the interim gallery launching in October 2026, art enthusiasts will still have an opportunity to engage with key works from the collection.
While it’s a temporary goodbye, the revamp promises a refreshed and more dynamic presentation of Southeast Asian art. For regular museum-goers and first-time visitors alike, the reopening in 2027 is shaping up to be worth the wait.
